The Heineken Open-air Music Festival
This short four day break is timed to coincide with the annual Heineken Open-air Music Festival held every July, at Gdynia, near Gdansk. As well as the music there is the opportunity to explore the Baltic coastal Cities of Gdansk, Sopot and Gdynia, known locally as the Tri-city, with time to see the major architectural and historical sites on a half day tour. Gdansk in particular is a city that has changed much in recent streets years; once thought of as a drab city, part of a communist state, it is now a vibrant city, with an energetic nightlife, but which retains many sights redolent of its turbulent history – a classic combination of yesteryear and today.
Day by Day itineray
Day 1.
30 Jun 2011. Join tour in Gdansk. Our weekend in Gdansk starts as we check in at our hotel, anytime after mid-day. Once settled in and unpacked, the rest of the first day is free until the late afternoon. The evening of course is best spent at the festival. Said by some to be amongst the finest cities of Northern Europe, the city was for a long time the wealthiest in Poland. The Second World War – which is said to have started here – brought wholesale destruction, but the city has been lovingly restored and is today a reminder of how history first shaped it. Most of the areas of interest are in the city centre, which is easily explored on foot; head for Dlugi Targ, the square with colourful buildings on all sides, and just wander from there. Close by are a myriad of cafes, bars and good restaurants. In the late afternoon we head for the Festival site.
Day 2.
01 Jul 2011. In Gdansk: morning walking tour; afternoon free. After breakfast we join our guide for a private walking tour of the city. We will visit the Monument to Solidarity, part of the city’s story of the shipyard worker who rose to become the Polish President; we walk on then, through the cobbled streets of the Old Town, ending up on the quay by the Moltawa River. After our tour finishes, time to get some lunch before spending the afternoon as you wish. Wandering further amongst the old streets of the city; taking a cruise on an old-style sailing ship to the River mouth; or watching the world go by; the choice is yours. And in the late afternoon we head back to the Festival.
Day 3.
02 Jul 2011. Morning free at leisure for optional excursions; afternoon and evening at Festival. How we choose to spend today depends on how late we left the Festival last night. The day is left free for those who want to wake up slowly and laze the day away. For those of us who want to sightsee there is the possibility of taking a cruise to the mouth of the Moltawa River, or arranging an optional excursion to Malbork Castle. In the late afternoon we return to the Festival.
Day 4.
03 Jul 2011. Tour ends. After breakfast our tour ends, and it’s time to head for the airport and the flight home. But if you have arranged a late flight, then there is time for a last wander through the Old Town and perhaps a little last-minute shopping, before it’s time to go home.
