A four day tennis weekend in Krakow

sml_tennisThis four day long weekend break offers the chance of a couple of sessions of tennis and also see the highlights of this southern Polish city, arguably the most intriguing in Poland. There is time to see the major architectural and historical sites on a half day tour, and free time to take an optional tour to Auschwitz or the salt mines. Krakow is a city that has in some ways changed much in recent years, and yet in other ways has remained pretty much unchanged. Although possessed of a vibrant nightlife, it still retains many sights redolent of its turbulent history – a classic combination of the old and the new.

Day by Day itinerary

Day 1.

Arrive Krakow. Our weekend in Krakow starts as we check in at the hotel. Once settled in, the rest of the first day and evening is then left free. If you have arrived on an early flight, you may want to fit in an additional game of tennis; if you advise us of this in advance we are happy to book this for you. Alternatively you may wish to explore the city. Most of the interesting places to see in Krakow are located in, or close to the Old Town, so it’s easy to explore the city on foot. An obvious landmark is Wawel Hill, with the Royal Castle and the Cathedral; to the north of the hill is the Old Town; to the south of the hill is Kazimierz, with the Jewish quarter. The market square, at the heart of the Old Town, is a good place to head for initially, to get your bearings. Close by are a myriad of cafes, bars and good restaurants. After dinner the Old Town comes alive until the early hours of the morning.

Day 2.

In Krakow. Morning at the tennis courts. Afternoon sightseeing tour. After breakfast our car will collect you for the drive to the courts. We have reserved an hour on court with your tennis tutor; additional time can be reserved at a small additional cost should you require this. After the game there is time for a little lunch before you join an afternoon sight-seeing tour of the city. Walking through the old Jewish quarter of Kazimierz, then a visit to Wawel Hill with the Castle and the Cathedral. From here, a walk up Grodska Street leads to the heart of Krakow, the Rynek Glowni, or main market square with its large gothic Cloth Hall. Our final stop is St Mary’s Church with its medieval altar. And then the rest of the day is free for you to explore at your own pace. You may prefer to just wander the streets of the old quarter, or you may prefer to fit in another round; the choice is yours.

Day 3.

In Krakow. Morning session at the tennis courts. Afternoon free for optional excursions. After breakfast we head back to the tennis courts for our second session. Again, extra time on court can be arranged, with or without tuition. After lunch the rest of the day is at leisure. You may like to explore more of the old city, or you may prefer to head out of town. A favourite destination for many visitors is the amazing Wieliczka Salt Mine. First opened some 700 years ago, the mine is still in use today, and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. During our visit you will see underground lakes, chambers, even buildings – an amazing experience.

Day 4.

Depart for home. After breakfast our tour ends, and it’s time to head for the airport and the flight home. But if you have arranged a late flight, then there is time for a last additional game of tennis, or a final wander through the Old Town and perhaps a little last-minute shopping, before it’s time to go home.
